about december 31. that's next monday, my friends, five short days from now. we have michael burgess of texas with us. i want to read you what the treasury secretary wrote to harry reid. he said i'm writing to inform you that the statutory debt limit will be reached on december 31. he went on to say that they have special gimmicks they are going to deploy to allow us to go past december 31. we have to tell you that here we are again. nothing is being done. we have no resolution of the fiscal cliff him and we are about to hit our heads on the debt ceiling. what you have to say? >> first off, let's remember that the debt limit is no surprise. the surprise is that he shouldn't be surprised. it's his job to keep track of this. and everybody knew that we are going to run out of money in december. apparently except for him. one of the big secrets during the presidential election, there were a lot of things that the administration kept from the american people. one of the big secrets was that we would hit this debt limit in december. because of the way they have been spending money for that

no adam shapiro will add on to that. there is a look at some movers. michael cores down over 6%. tracy: i was in the balls this weekend. lori: crowded theater not like i thought it would be. adam shapiro in the newsroom with the details. i thought it was way busier last year than it was this weekend. >> no. here are some numbers. for the period of october to eight and december 24, sales grew. in 2011, sales for that period of time grew 2%. they are using that as an indicator that things will not be as good as we thought going into the holiday shopping season. on monday, shopper track indicated and revise their outlook for the holiday spending growth from 3.3% down to 2.5%. the only holdout is the national retail federation. it is saying that they still expect growth this holiday season to be 4.1% over the last year. they are sticking to those numbers. one of the reasons spending polls believe we saw a drop-off and had to revise the predictions for the year, superstorm sandy. they do not think it was consumers fear got as much as it was on the drops of the markets in the middle east. back

service. michael is a democratic strategist, and he joins us as well. good to see you both. tony, look, the word we're getting is that harry reid is going to pass an extension of the bush tax cuts for anybody under 250,000, extend unemployment benefits for two million folks. um, now, if that happens, it goes to the house, and the house will probably have to put it up. aren't republicans, your party, going to wish that they had passed plan b? >> absolutely, gregg. look, plan b really should have been our plan a, number one. number two, plan b was really the idea of chuck schumer and nancy pelosi as recently as in this summer. to set the threshold on incomes to a million dollars versus 250,000, allow those tax rates for a million and above go up, the president talked about taxing millionaires and billionaires, that would be right, and now let the rest of the country enjoy the extension of the full bush tax cuts which i think we now even see democrats acknowledging have meaningful -- gregg: basil, if it doesn't work, the president's going to have egg on his face, right? >> no, not at all.
